The weeding spud is a steel chisel with a curved shank perfect for digging down and cutting off weeds below the surface. Most weed seeds will germinate within the top inch or so of soil, and the weeding spud is meant to get down below that to cut through roots that have developed below. The curve in the shank enables the gardener to use some leverage to lift up and loosen the soil around the base of the weed, so they can grab and lift it out by the stem or leaves.
