A Grafting Chisel from Spring Steel
This is a grafting chisel to use when grafting fruit trees and other similar small trees. Based on an old tool no longer made, this chisel’s design allows you to open a small split in the tree trunk/wood with the rounded 2″ edge. It is sharp enough to go into the wood easily and cleanly, without cutting through the wood fibers. You then remove the rounded chisel side, and tap the triangular wedge side into the split you started with the chisel side. This helps to open up the cut wide enough that the grafting start can be set in around 1.5-2″ or so deep. Remove the wedge and the split closes on the new wood. Finish the grafting and move on to the next one.
