- Densely branched, upright, oval to rounded, spreading crown
- Dark green ovate to elliptic glossy leaves have a wavy texture
- Leaves turn a golden-bronze in fall, change to light brown, and persist, sometimes well into the next year
- Smooth, light gray bark
- Will produce a nut enclosed in a spiny bract
